Iranian embassy visa application process for international students

How it works

From acceptance letter to residence permit — exactly what happens and when.

What is the Iranian Student Visa?

The Iranian student visa — officially a Type D (Student) Visa — is issued to international students who have been formally accepted by an Iranian university. It allows a single entry into the country and must be converted to an annual student residence permit within 30 days of arrival.

The visa is managed by Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in coordination with the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (MSRT). Only students with an acceptance letter from a university recognised by MSRT are eligible. ParlаStudy only works with MSRT-listed institutions.

1

Receive Your University Acceptance Letter

Prerequisite

You cannot apply for a student visa without an official acceptance letter from an Iranian university. ParlаStudy manages the application process and delivers your acceptance letter within 2–4 weeks of submission.

2

Prepare Your Documents

Preparation

Gather all required documents (see checklist below). All documents in a language other than Persian or English must be officially translated and notarised. Allow 1–2 weeks for translation if needed.

3

Submit at the Iranian Embassy

Embassy visit

Visit the Iranian embassy or consulate in your country with your full document package. Book an appointment in advance — walk-ins are rarely accepted. ParlаStudy provides a verified checklist and a cover letter for your appointment.

4

Visa Processing (2–4 weeks)

Processing

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in Tehran verifies your university acceptance. Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks. Some nationalities may be asked for an additional security clearance, which can extend this to 6–8 weeks.

5

Collect Your Visa & Travel

Collection

Once approved, collect your visa sticker from the embassy. Book your flights after visa approval — not before. Your student visa is typically single-entry valid for 90 days of initial entry.

6

Convert to Residence Permit on Arrival

After arrival

Within 30 days of arrival, you must visit the Aliens Police (Edare-ye Ajaneb) with your university to convert the entry visa into an annual student residence permit. ParlаStudy's on-ground team accompanies you to this appointment.

Typical timeline: most students receive their visa in 3–6 weeks from submitting at the embassy. Apply before your intake deadline.

Document Checklist

Have every item ready before booking your embassy appointment.

ParlаStudy document review: Before you visit the embassy, send us your document package — we will check it against the current requirements for your specific university and nationality, at no cost.

After You Arrive — Residence Permit

Your student visa gets you through the airport. Within 30 days you must convert it to an annual residence permit.

1

Gather documents

Current residence permit, valid passport, university enrollment confirmation, proof of academic progress, and two passport photos.

2

Get a university support letter

Request a letter from your university's international student office confirming you are enrolled and in good standing.

3

Visit the Foreigners' Registration Office

In Iran, foreign residents register and renew permits at the local Foreigners' Registration Office (Edare-ye Ajaneb) — a government immigration office, not a police station. Submit your documents at the same branch where your original permit was issued. Your university's international office can accompany you.

4

Pay the renewal fee

Approximately $30–$80 USD equivalent in Iranian Rials, paid directly at the office.

5

Collect your new permit

Issued same-day or within 1–3 working days in most cities.

Annual renewal: The residence permit must be renewed every year. Your university's international student office will guide you — ParlаStudy also assists with your first-year renewal at no cost.

Embassy & Processing by Country

Processing times and embassy details for the most common student nationalities.

🇳🇬

Nigeria

3–6 weeks
Iranian Embassy, Abuja (also Consulate in Lagos)

Nigerian applicants often face additional MFA security clearance. Plan for up to 6 weeks. Book your appointment well in advance as the Abuja embassy has limited slots.

🇵🇰

Pakistan

2–4 weeks
Iranian Embassy, Islamabad (Consulates in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta)

Processing is generally smooth for Pakistani nationals due to strong bilateral relations. Multiple consulates reduce travel time to submit.

🇰🇪

Kenya

3–5 weeks
Iranian Embassy, Nairobi

Kenyan applicants should ensure all documents are formally notarised. Limited embassy capacity — book your appointment 2–3 weeks in advance.

🇮🇶

Iraq

1–3 weeks
Iranian Embassy, Baghdad (Consulates in Basra, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah)

Iraqi nationals benefit from one of the fastest processing times due to close ties. Multiple consulate locations across Iraq.

🇦🇫

Afghanistan

3–6 weeks
Iranian Embassy, Kabul

Afghan applicants should be aware of additional documentation requirements. Contact ParlаStudy for current embassy status and alternative routes if needed.

Common Mistakes That Lead to Rejection

Avoid these — they are the most frequent reasons student visa applications fail.

Incomplete document package

Missing even one document results in rejection. Use the checklist below and have ParlаStudy review your package before submission.

Booking flights before visa approval

Never book non-refundable flights until your visa is physically in hand. Processing delays happen — protect your money.

Photos without hijab (for women)

Iranian visas require women to wear hijab in their passport photos regardless of nationality or religion. Applications with non-compliant photos are returned.

Expired or soon-to-expire passport

Your passport must have at least 2 years of validity remaining. Renew your passport before applying if it expires within 24 months.

Not registering with Aliens Police on arrival

Failing to convert your entry visa to a residence permit within 30 days results in an illegal overstay. This affects your ability to renew and exit.

Using an agent not licensed by MSRT

Unlicensed agents cannot obtain genuine acceptance letters from universities. Fake or unofficial letters result in visa rejection and wasted fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions students ask before applying.

Do I need a student visa before arriving in Iran to study?
Yes. You must obtain a student visa from an Iranian embassy in your home country before travelling. Arriving on a tourist visa and attempting to convert it to a student visa inside Iran is not a reliable or recommended route.
How long does it take to get an Iranian student visa?
Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks from the date of embassy submission. Some nationalities (particularly Nigerian, Kenyan, and Afghan applicants) may face additional Ministry of Foreign Affairs security clearance, extending this to 6–8 weeks. Apply well before your intended arrival date.
Can I work while on a student visa in Iran?
Student visa holders are not automatically permitted to work. Limited on-campus employment (teaching assistant, lab assistant roles) is possible with explicit written permission from your university and a work authorisation from the Ministry of Labour. Off-campus employment is generally not permitted.
What happens if my visa application is rejected?
You can reapply after addressing the reason for rejection. Common reasons include incomplete documents, photos not meeting hijab requirements, or an unverified acceptance letter. ParlаStudy reviews applications before submission to minimise rejection risk. Contact us immediately if your application is rejected.
Can my family join me on a student visa?
Spouses and children can apply for dependent residence permits once you have your student residence permit in Iran. They apply at the Aliens Police with proof of your student status, marriage certificate (notarised), and birth certificates for children.
Do I need to renew my student visa every year?
Yes. The student residence permit you receive after arrival is valid for one academic year and must be renewed annually. Renewal is straightforward — your university's international office guides you through it. ParlаStudy also assists with first-year renewal.
Is there a visa on arrival option for students?
Iran offers visa on arrival at major airports for tourist purposes, but this is not a valid route for students intending to enrol. University registration requires a student visa — not a tourist stamp. Always obtain your student visa before travelling.
Will having an Israeli stamp in my passport cause problems?
Yes. Iran does not permit entry to holders of Israeli passports or passports containing Israeli stamps or visas. If your passport has an Israeli stamp, you must obtain a new passport before applying.
